Mile End Road
Whole House Interior Design – Mile End, East London
This five-bedroom Grade II listed Georgian terrace in Mile End, East London, had been divided into rented lodgings over the years. The layout had become disjointed, with sinks in the corners of bedrooms, a kitchenette on the top floor and a shower room opening off the main kitchen. The house needed a complete rethink to restore its flow and character as a functional family home.
The brief was to create a sense of connection between the rooms while giving each one its own distinct personality. Original features were retained where possible, complemented by new elements that felt sympathetic to the Georgian architecture. The result blends period charm with a lighter, more contemporary feel.
In the master bedroom, everything started with a Calico Wabi Lichen wallpaper in soft blush pink, duck egg and gold. Its marbled pattern informed the palette and detailing, from pink velvet curtains and Calamine-washed wardrobes to a French-style Super King bed by Loaf. Sliding pocket doors lead into the ensuite, where limestone tiles, brass fittings and sculptural hammock basins by Splinterworks continue the warm tones. Brass handles on the doors were custom-designed to echo the wallpaper’s pattern, with embossed detailing on the bedroom side.
The pink marble guest bathroom was inspired by traditional powder rooms. A Catchpole & Rye copper bath is framed by slabs of muted pink marble, selected in person at JR Marble’s East London factory. The walls and radiators are painted in Farrow & Ball’s Pink Ground, with skirting boards in the same tone to create a calm, unified backdrop. Carrara marble basketweave tiles on the floor add subtle contrast, while a bespoke walnut cabinet conceals a washer, dryer and ironing board without compromising elegance.
The children’s playroom is designed as a soft, joyful space, with a canvas teepee reading nook, built-in storage and a neon ‘play’ sign that adds warmth in the evening. Blush tones and tactile materials keep the space playful yet calm.
A small reading nook was carved from part of a long guest bedroom and adjacent corridor. A new skylight introduces natural light into the stairwell, while a red velvet loveseat, cast iron radiator and timber shelf create a welcoming place to unwind. Open shelving adds personality and makes use of every inch.
Throughout this Tower Hamlets home, careful spatial planning, bespoke joinery and considered finishes bring each room to life. Just a short distance from neighbouring Hackney, the design reflects a balance of heritage sensitivity and modern East London living. Soft colour palettes, layered textures and personal touches help create a home that feels cohesive yet full of individuality – functional, characterful and designed to evolve with the people living in it.
