Interior Design for Commercial Space in Wanstead, East London

Studio Milne was commissioned to transform the Wanstead office of estate agents Stow Brothers, delivering a serene and welcoming environment that redefines what commercial interiors can be. The brief called for a space that reflected the client’s design-conscious, community-focused brand, offering both functionality and a sense of calm.

As an interior designer for commercial spaces in East London, Studio Milne introduced a biophilic design approach with abundant planting, enhancing wellbeing and visual interest throughout the space. A large existing skylight became a defining architectural feature, softened with new wooden joists that diffuse daylight and create a more atmospheric quality of light.

Lighting played a central role in the transformation. A row of brushed brass pendants from Dyke & Dean adds sculptural impact above the front counter, while oversized fabric ceiling lights from Pinch bring softness and warmth to the central workspace. Studio Haran’s handmade ceramic wall sconces contribute gentle, ambient illumination and a crafted sensibility to the scheme.

Sustainability was key throughout the project. Studio Milne retained as much of the existing fit-out as possible, including the original joinery and concrete flooring, both of which were in excellent condition. These elements were reinterpreted through thoughtful styling and detailing, reducing waste and giving the space a renewed identity with minimal intervention.

The long communal desk supports small business interior design needs with its practical layout and warm finishes, encouraging collaboration and comfort for the team. The existing stepped joinery unit was reimagined as a central design feature, styled with trailing greenery and ceramic pots to subtly zone the space and create a sense of rhythm and openness.

At the front of the office, a bespoke bench seat was upholstered in a fabric that ties together the room’s tonal palette, offering a relaxed spot for informal meetings and a warm welcome for clients. The wall-mounted shelves in the entrance area were designed to double as a rotating gallery space for local artists. This keeps the interior fresh and ever-changing, while supporting the creative community and offering artists an opportunity to showcase and sell their work.

The palette is grounded in warm terracotta tones and natural textures. The walls are painted in a bespoke finish that mimics the tonal variation of clay plaster, adding depth and a sense of movement. This layered, textural approach brings a calm and considered quality to the space.

This project is a standout example of sustainable commercial interior design in East London. Studio Milne has created a light-filled, welcoming and highly functional workspace that celebrates existing materials, supports wellbeing, and showcases the beauty of thoughtful, design-led interiors.
